Historic Appanoose County Courthouse

Monday, January 23, 2017

The historical significance of the City of Centerville’s Square is the Appanoose County Courthouse. Located in the Courthouse Square Historic District, the Appanoose County Courthouse was listed as a contributing property in 1997. This was 16 years after being listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which was in 1981. Dedicated on September 12, 1904, the Appanoose County Courthouse sits perfectly in the center of the Square. The clock tower, which rises from the middle of the building, sets the building apart from all others and is considered the pride of Appanoose County. The exterior walls of the Courthouse are covered with Bedford stone veneer and the roof is all tile. This impressive and magnificent building was constructed for $90,600 in 1903; which would cost approximately $2.34 million in 2016 dollars when adjusted for inflation.
