Rathbun Fish Hatchery - Stock the State

Monday, February 13, 2017

The Rathbun Fish Hatchery is a unique, but not a new project to Appanoose County through the production of warm water fingerlings. The Rathbun Fish Hatchery produces fish that are stocked statewide in ponds, rivers and more than 250 lakes and reservoirs. The Rathbun Fish Hatchery produces more than 200,000 large fingerling catfish, 100,000 small fingerling catfish, 50 million walleye fry, 225,000 two inch walleye fingerlings and 175,000 eight inch walleye fingerlings annually. This project was made possible due to funding from the Iowa Legislature, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the sale of hunting and fishing licenses. Operating expenses for the Rathbun Fish Hatchery are entirely funded through the sale of hunting and fishing licenses.
