Hunting in Appanoose County

Appanoose County is a prime location to hunt whitetail deer, pheasant, turkey, and quail. Located in Appanoose County are 12,000 acres of public hunting grounds ideal for hunters to utilize during the appropriate hunting seasons. The Sedan Bottoms Wildlife Area is a public hunting area managed by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Sedan Bottoms covers 5,989 acres and is home to deer, turkey, pheasant, waterfowl, quail and dove. The Rathbun Wildlife Area near Rathbun Lake is also managed by the Iowa DNR. The Stephens State Forest near Unionville is another public hunting spot in Appanoose County which covers 2,501 acres and has other species, such as squirrel and rabbit for the avid hunter.
