Bemis, located at 1400 East Oneal Street in Centerville, Iowa, is a one branch of the larger Bemis Company, Inc. Bemis started in 1858 in St. Louis, Missouri, as a manufacturer of cotton bags for grain products and milled food. To this day, it remains a manufacturer of various kinds of state-of-the-art packaging, most of which is used in the food industry.
From Bemis’s 2014 annual report: “The U.S. Packaging segment represents all food, consumer, and industrial products packaging-related manufacturing operations located in the United States. This segment manufactures multilayer polymer, blown and cast film structures to produce packaging sold for food and personal care product applications as well as non-food applications. Markets for these products include processed and fresh meat, dairy, liquids, frozen foods, cereals, snacks, cheese, coffee, condiments, candy, pet food, bakery, lawn and garden, tissue, fresh produce, personal care and hygiene, disposable diapers, and agribusiness.” (pg. 23, http://bemis.lccdn.com/Bemis/media/Library/pdf/unrestricted/Bemis-Annual-Report-2014.pdf)
Centerville’s Bemis manufacturing plant has an annual sales volume of around $93 million. It employs approximately 400 people out of Bemis’s worldwide workforce of 17,000. Including the Centerville location, Bemis operates 60 facilities in 11 countries around the world.
Bemis is a member of the Appanoose Economic Development Corporation at the level of Economic Leader.
