Honey Creek Resort - So much to do you may never want to leave

Monday, July 27, 2015

Honey Creek Resort is the Iowa Department of Natural Resources’ first destination lodge in the state. And what a destination it is!

Located on the north side of Rathbun Lake within Honey Creek State Park, Honey Creek Resort was designed to allow visitors to enjoy the natural surroundings. It’s Great Lodge has 105 rooms sized from Queen to Presidential Suite. There are 28 luxury cottages to rent, or, if RV camping is your thing, there is an RV Park with 20 campsites.

Honey Creek Resort has its own golf course, The Preserve on Lake Rathbun; a restaurant, the Rathbun Lakeshore Grill; meeting and events facilities; and the Buccaneer Bay Indoor Water Park. Because the resort is located on Iowa’s second largest lake, hotel guests can also take advantage of amenities related to Rathbun Lake, such as boat ramps or rentals of boats, Sea-Doos, kayaks, canoes, and pontoons.

One of the unusual features of the resort is the free nature programs it offers to guests. Because the resort is located in a state park and is run by the DNR, a focus on the natural surroundings and conservation are part of the resort’s mission. There are two full-time naturalists on staff at the resort. They present a variety of educational programs every week, including bird watching, lake shore walks, geocaching, star gazing, kayaking, “Ask a Naturalist,” and animal tracking.

The resort has an Activities Building for some of these programs. The building was designed by students from Iowa State University with the goal of being a net-zero energy facility. “It uses solar heating, wind energy, and highly efficient appliances.” (http://honeycreekresort.com/conservation) Additionally, the lodge at the resort has achieved LEED Environmental Certification.

Honey Creek Resort provides so many opportunities for relaxing and enjoying nature in a sustainable environment that you may never want to leave.
